Understanding mental Illness

The term “mental health” has become widely used to describe conditions ranging from stress to serious medical conditions. The National Alliance on Mental Illness is a nationwide advocacy group that provides excellent information to understand symptoms of mental illness, available therapies for treatment, and specific considerations for active duty service members. You can check out their website: Here.

What do I need to know about my duty status/LIMDU/ADSEP

Navy Medicine in general, and Mental Health, in particular, strive to keep sailors healthy and ready in a fit-for-full duty status whenever possible. However, some mental health conditions are not compatible with full duty. Depending on your unique situation you may be referred for a period of Light Duty, or Limited Duty. Light and Limited Duty are designed to return sailors to active duty as quickly as possible while giving them time to ensure they can complete dedicated and intensive medical treatment. In certain circumstances, specific mental health conditions do not allow for ongoing military service and require referral for either Administrative Separation or Medical Separation.

Recommendations for a change in duty status are made based on the medical needs of each patient. Changes in duty status are not used to address issues such as command climate concerns, UCMJ violations, or dissatisfaction with a particular command.

You can learn more about LIMDU here.

You can learn more about ADSEP here.

You can learn more about MEB here.
